Mounjaro weight-loss injections: What you need to know
Important Information About Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) Prescribing
You may soon see media reports stating that GPs can now prescribe weight loss injections, such as Mounjaro, from June.
While this is technically correct, the eligibility requirements are extremely strict.
Out of our patient population at Bilsthorpe Surgery we estimate that only a very small number—fewer than a dozen individuals—will meet the necessary criteria. A number of those may already be using Mounjaro to manage type 2 diabetes.
To help manage expectations and reduce unnecessary appointments, please carefully check the criteria below before requesting a consultation about Mounjaro:
Eligibility Criteria
- BMI Requirement: Your body mass index (BMI) must be over 40. You can calculate your BMI using your height and weight [insert BMI calculator link]. Please note we will measure your height and weight at your appointment, so this must be accurate.
- Health Conditions: In addition to a BMI over 40, you must have a confirmed diagnosis of at least four out of the following five conditions:
- High blood pressure that requires medication
- Obstructive sleep apnoea (diagnosed in a sleep clinic)
- Type 2 diabetes
- Cardiovascular disease (e.g. heart disease, stroke, or vascular conditions)
- High cholesterol (hypercholesterolaemia)
If you do not meet all of the above criteria, current prescribing guidelines mean we are unable to offer Mounjaro for weight loss purposes.
Please Do Not Book an Appointment for Mounjaro Unless You Are Eligible
For those who don’t qualify, other support options are available. We encourage patients to explore the Your health Notts which offers free support.
Thank you for your understanding.
